PnYR-TV v2.0

Posted by doug j. on Apr 21 2008 4:27 PM

so it seems there has been a lot of complaints about the Live TV feed of the show.  today i was web-surfing at lunch and while checking out pnyr.big1059.com, i found a strange looking chat box. it didnt let me sign on, but after a little hacking, i found this:

http://www.justin.tv/paulandyoungron/archive

i email SDJ, and he confirmed that this will be PnYR-TV version 2.0

it requires NO download, and you can view right from te main page(or view full-screen if you want) the video in the link above was shot with SDJ's laptop webcam, so the live feed will look WAY better.

thats it for today boys and girls. see yall tomorrow in the chatroom(s)

Just checked out the justin tv test archive.  Looked at some other live channels on there as well.  It's a nice destination site, but the video quality is pixelated.  Not sure I understand how it's better.

Easier, yes.  Nothing to install, yes.  Embedded in browser window, yes.  Better quality, I'm not seeing it.  It's the same pixelated poor quality found on many webtv sites.  Leaving the picture window small makes it better, but then for a shot of the room, how will we see the details, the facial expressions, etc.  Justin tv was not designed for production quality webtv, it was for mobile lifecasting.

i just happened to go to PnYR dot com as SDJ was testing the new chat. i clicked on it, looked around a bit and found the archive. SDJ confirmed that it will be v.2.0 of PnYR-TV. i hope he shoots a little video with the REAL camera so we can see what its gonna looka like. a new guy on the chat (bass_man) was complaining about the video quality of JustinTV, but i could never get the Avarena Viewer to work right at home and it got firewalled at work, so even medium quality video is better to me (and a lot of others) than high quality video that i cant see. besides the fact that 3 weeks ago, there was NO video feed at all. i'm looking forward to it!

Avarena had better video quality for me (when it worked)...the new service is just another Flash based streaming player like YouTube, and it doesn't have as much resolution as the fat client player Avarena. But more resolution means it's more bandwidth hungry, less firewall friendly, and obviously this was PC centric, excluding our friends with Macs. It's tough to be all things to everyone...

Great points.  I can see how Justin.tv, can be more things to more people, for now.

I just really liked the video quality.  Oh, well.  As long as I can watch

I was curious about what Avarena was, so I emailed their support today.

Found out some interesting stuff...

The product is in beta still, and it's intended to be P2P, for more efficient/inutitive bandwidth distribution.  The port fwding isn't required, it will still work and peer regardless, but the more viewers who open thier ports the better it is for all initial connections.  They said a Mac client will be created as well as clients for smartphones.  I installed Netlimiter Monitor for free, and watched the ips and bandwidth dl and ul...pretty efficient for the resolution (they have to be compressing somehow, seems impossible).  Just wish they would let us download the complete viewer install file, might resolve the firewall install problems people are having.  Chat window and some other useful things would also be nice.  Will be interesting to see what becomes of the product.

(Sorry for geeking out...I just like testing things.)
